Mabel Elizabeth Proffitt Duncan, age 81, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening, January 6, 2016. She met her Savior finally free of pain. Mabel was born on March 7, 1934, to the late Roy Lane Proffitt and Bessie Perry Proffitt in Rock Hill, Tenn. She was a resident of Abingdon, Va. for over forty years.
Mabel is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Bobby Bob Duncan; her sister and brother-in-law, Carlene and Bill Sluder of Johnson City, Tenn.; her son and daughter-in-law, Bradley and Rosa Duncan and their three children, Gabriel, Maria, and Catie, of Centerville, Ohio; and her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Joe Russ and their three children, Emily, Kaylee, and Noah, of Hillsborough, N.C.
In her early career, Mabel worked as a nurse at the Veterans Administration in Johnson City and at Bristol Hospital. She retired from Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon where she enjoyed 15 years of caring for the newborns. In the interim, for several years, Mabel worked as the secretary at her church, Pleasant View United Methodist Church.
Mabel courageously faced many health struggles over the past 40 years with a sweet spirit, her faith never failing. She loved her family with all her heart, and was a precious wife, Mom, and Nana.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 9, 2016, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Va. 24210, with Dr. Ralph Kidd and Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens where pallbearers will be Noah Russ, Gabriel Duncan, David Duncan, Jimmy Sisk, Marvin Tate, Marty Large, Robert Hughes, and Fred Adkins. Members of the Fellowship Class of Pleasant View United Methodist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 9th at the Forest Hills Chapel.
