Madge Candler Greer, age 95, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in the Carterton section of Russell County to the late Janie Kiser Candler and Fitzhugh Lee Candler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend John Franklin Greer, Jr.; sister, Clarice Estes; and brothers, Grady and Dr. Paul Candler.

Madge was an alumnus of Emory & Henry College, class of 1939. She taught first grade in Mill Creek, Honaker, and Coeburn, VA before marrying the Rev. John Greer. She spent 54 years as a Methodist minister's wife serving many churches throughout East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia before retiring to Abingdon in 1982. She loved her family and her church. Madge loved everyone she met and called them all "Honey". Mrs. Greer took great pleasure in art, music, and poetry and in gardening with her neighbor, Diane Graham.

She is survived by her son, John F. Greer, III and his wife Chris of Abingdon, VA; daughter, Suzanne Greer Lay and husband Don of Abingdon, VA; grandchildren, Sarah Lay Sapeta and husband Mike of Hopkinton, Mass., David Matthew Lay and wife Laura, of Richmond, VA, and Megan Greer Hicks and husband Mark of Telford, TN; nine great-grandchildren who all called her "Gi-Gi"-- Olivia, Sam, and George Sapeta; Alex, Isaac, Oliver, and Henry Hicks; and Sasha and Bryce Lay; sisters, Martha Gilliam of Wise, VA, Mary Whitesell of Purcelville, VA, and Lois Hill of Emory, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 P.M. Friday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Sherry Boles and Rev. Elizabeth Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow at Holston Conference Cemetery, Emory, VA, with nephews serving as pallbearers.
