Mae T. "Mops" Holmes, 87, is in the presence of our Lord and Savior. She passed away Sunday, May 9, 2010 with her family and friends all around her.
She was born in Smyth County, VA and was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Harvey S. Holmes; her parents, J.D. Thompson and Eliza Wood Thompson; one brother, Claude Thompson; and two sisters, Lois Sawyer and Virginia Smith.
Mops spent her life loving and caring for others. She was a devoted Christian and member of Highlands Fellowship. She read the Bible daily and enjoyed working and being with her friends in the Food Pantry at Highlands and in Bible study in her home. She was a wonderful witness and mentor to everyone she met.
She enjoyed spending time with her daughter, Venida "Rat" Rymer of Abingdon; her granddaughters, Debra "Doe" Ferguson husband, Tom, Jane Castle and husband, Miller; her great grandchildren, Thomas Ferguson, III, Brittany Ferguson and Samuel Ferguson; and her special four-legged friend, Niki. Her family was her life. Mrs. Holmes has two loving sisters, Thelma Elmore and Revonda Jackson and one brother, James Thompson.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at JMH, Home Healthcare of Abingdon and Fran Hagy from Hospice of Southwest Virginia.
A celebration of Mae's life will be held at 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 11, 2010 in Highlands Fellowship with Pastor Jimmie Davidson officiating. The family will receive friends there from 6:00 P.M. until time of service.
Committal services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Mt. Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring. Pallbearers will be Tom Ferguson, Miller Castle, Thomas Ferguson, Toby Jessee, Paul Davidson, Bill Debord, Bob Trent and Jim Stanley. The procession from Farris Funeral Service will leave at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday.
