Margaret Belle Newton went home to be with the Lord on April 4, 2011 at Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie, Va. surrounded by family and friends.
Margaret was born August 26, 1933 in Emory, Virginia to the late Mary R. Newton. She attended Douglas High School of Bristol, Virginia and was a long time employee of Bristol Compressors.
Originally, she was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in the Blacksburg community and later joined the Mount Calvary Community church where she was a faithful and devoted member. She served as treasurer of the Missionary Society and a member of the Pastor's Aid.
You could always count on Margaret to check on the sick and shut in, make the tea and cook the green beans. She and Sister Mary Johnson was a team that worked well together in the church's kitchen.
This is the time of year that she always planted her flowers and tomato plants. This year she will plant them in heaven.
Margaret was preceded in death by sons, James Kenneth Newton, Sr. and David Alexander Newton; all her siblings, Graham Alexander Newton, Ruth Geneva Newton, Mildred Ann Mackey, Shirley Lucille Rochester and Leona Marie Newton.
She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter: Marjorie Newton Smith of Glade Spring, Virginia; two sons: William Robert Newton of Brooklyn, NY and Anthony Eugene Newton of Johnson City, TN; special niece, Peggy J. Newton of Glade Spring, Va.; grandsons: James K. Newton, Jr., Dwayne C. Smith, Johnathan Newton, Stephon Newton.
The family acknowledges with deep appreciation all kindness and expressions of love during this time. The many visits, prayers, cards, whatever the deed, we thank you. A special "Thank You" to the first floor staff of Valley Health Care Center and to the 3rd and 4th floor nursing staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Community Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow the service at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Marcus Montgomery, Danny Fields, Stephen Fields, Tony Surber, William Allen, Michael Lampkins; honorary pallbearers will be Freddie Hawthorne, Bill Fields, Daryl Coleman, Bro. Daniel Hounshell, Sr., Bro. Donnie Counts, Bro. Charles DeBord, Charles Bradley, Billy Bradley, and David Bradley.
