Margaret Bowers Humphreys, a well-known resident of Country Club Estates in Abingdon, died Sunday, January 2, 2011, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was born December 22, 1930, to the late Paul Bowers and Effie G. Bowers. She was a graduate of Meadowview High School and Johnston Memorial Hospital Nurses School, Registered Nursing Class of 1951. She had worked as a registered nurse and retired as Director of Nursing at the William Neff Vocational Center.
Mrs. Humphreys was active in her church and community. She attended Abingdon Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Joanna Maiden Owens Sunday School class and chair of the Abingdon Baptist Shalom Circle. She was also a member of Abingdon Book Lovers Club, Bridge Club, Random Arts Club, and the Virginia Highlands Festival Committee.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Shirley B. Bordwine.
Survivors include her husband of fifty-eight years, Ernest E. Humphreys; daughter Barbara Joyce (BJ) Humphreys Graham, husband Keith and grandson Tyler Bryce Graham, all of Pulaski, VA; one sister, Irene "Bobbi" Ryburn of Abingdon; her husband's family including George and Phyllis Humphreys, Mary Ann Humphreys, Lois Humphreys, Lavinia Cullip, Phyllis and C. W. Price, all of Abingdon; Bertha Parsons of Meadowview; and Ruth Humphreys of Lynchburg, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Bowers Humphreys will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 2011, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Dr. Steven Pollard officiating. Burial will follow in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Allen, John Humphreys, Phillip Humphreys, Greg Humphreys, Rick Humphreys, Steve Parsons, David White and C. W. Price. Honorary pallbearers will be Freddie Bowers, Mark Goodman,Mike Humphreys, Ranny Humphreys, Mark Humphreys, George Yuhasz and Matt White, Bob Whelen and Mike Porcaro Dr. William Cummins, Rick Thomas, Scott Belcher, Lee Brannon, Robert Cullip and the fifth floor staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
