Margaret Broyles Akers, age 93, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Hummingbird Retirement Villa in Lebanon, VA. Margaret was born in the Weaver community of Sullivan County, TN to the late William Orbin Broyles and Mertie Isabell Crumley Broyles.
She lived most of her life in Bristol and Glade Spring, and she was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where she served many years as a Sunday school teacher and church officer. Margaret was an executive secretary for Monroe Calculators in 1950's and a homemaker in the years after that.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William "Bill" Akers Sr.; two brothers, William O. Broyles, Jr. and John William; her sister, Mildred Broyles King; and her grandson-in-law, Michael Gates.
Survivors include her daughter, Patty Johnson of Newport Beach, CA, her son, Bill Akers Jr. and wife Cherie of Lebanon, VA; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Johnson and wife Julie, Tiffany Gates, Adam Johnson and wife Kim, all of CA, Nathaniel Akers and Bethany Akers of Lebanon, VA; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leota B. Faidley of Blountville, TN and Leona B. Wyatt of Bristol, TN; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00p.m, Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Friendship Baptist Church with Reverend Paul Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Church Cemetery where Michael Gaultney, Sheriff Fred Newman, Randy Sullivan, Tim McVey, Steve King and Joel Faidley will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Brown, Harold Porter and Gene Moser. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Saturday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friendship Baptist Church, 35411 Love's Mill Road, Glade Spring, VA 24340.
