“Her children rise up and call her blessed…” Proverbs 31:28
Angels carried Lucile to her heavenly home on Thursday, August 15, 2024. She was the first born of nine children to her father, Sando Kennedy and her mother, Maxie Lee Mitchell Kennedy. She married the love of her life, Herbert Nay Duncan on September 1, 1951. In the 1950’s they lived in Baltimore, MD and Richmond, VA, before returning to Abingdon, VA in the 1960’s to raise their four children: Ronnie, Sherrie, Randy and Pam.
Lucile worked in healthcare at Johnston Memorial Hospital before retiring after 20+ years of service. She loved traveling, camping adventures, attending church and family gatherings. Lucile took pride in preparing family meals to foster fellowship and ensure everyone felt welcomed in her home. She also enjoyed reading her bible, crocheting, listening to Alan Jackson CDs, gospel music, and eating at Panda Express (“that noodle place”).
Lucile leaves behind her loving family, including her children, Ronnie Duncan, Sherrie Duncan Gallimore (Keith), Randy Duncan, and Pam Duncan Gibson. Her grandchildren, Jeremiah Duncan (Melissa), Amy Ghilardi, Isaiah Duncan, Ben Duncan (Melissa), Rebekah Sibert (Adam), Whitney Calloway (Wesley), Courtney Claiborne (Christian), Miranda Carmona, Candace Johnson (Kermit), Matthew Lewis (April), and Andrew Gibson. She had 26 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren that she loved and adored.
Lucile was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her siblings, Edna Hobbs, Francis Wise, Peggy Thomas, Walter Kennedy, Roger Kennedy, and two great grandsons, Matthew Lewis, and Remington “Cash” Claiborne. She is survived by her siblings, Joe Kennedy (Peggy), Sando Kennedy (Rebekah), Leona Lebo (Art), as well as many nieces and nephews.
In her 90 year journey, one of the most valuable lessons she learned was that her plans rarely aligned with God’s plans. Lucile knew that no one takes anything with them from this life except for their soul. She loved the Lord, her husband of 69 years, her four children, her family, her pastor, Scott Price, friends, neighbors, and her healthcare providers. She acknowledged and appreciated anyone with a kind heart and a selfless spirit.
In lieu of flowers, Lucile has requested memorial gifts be sent to Fellowship Chapel or her favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Her memory reminds us to tell those in our lives we love them, and to share the good news of Jesus Christ, so that all may have eternal life.
