Abingdon, VA- Margaret Swift McCarty, age 88, passed away on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Wellmont Hospice House. She was a lifelong member of Suburban Christian Church in Bristol, VA where her parents were founding members. As a member of the church she taught Sunday school, served as a deaconess and treasurer, and was involved in the Ladies Group as well as various other committees. Mrs. McCarty taught at Haynesfield Elementary School in Bristol, TN for over 30 years and was a member of the NEA, TEA, and BTEA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, William E. McCarty; parents, Joseph Swift and Leita Cole Swift, who were also married for 60 years; five siblings, Joe and David Swift, Elon Hall, Hubert Swift, and Freida Shortt; and great granddaughter, Sarah Kay McCarty. She is survived by two sons, Garry William McCarty and wife Stephanie of Loganville, GA and Joseph Eugene McCarty and wife Ellen of Mobile, AL; daughter, Gwendolyn McCarty Wilson and husband Joe of the home; five grandchildren: Elizabeth McCarty of Shady Valley, TN; Alex McCarty of Loganville, GA; Shaun McCarty and wife Brandy of Birmingham, AL; Todd McCarty and wife Krystal of Birmingham, AL; and Theresa McVie and husband Rob of Lookout Mountain, TN; seven great grandchildren, Tommi, Matthew, and Georgie McCarty, Ava-Marie and Charlotte McCarty, and Reiter and Huw McVie; special niece, Patricia Swift; and several other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral ceremony will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Minister Richard Pannell officiating. A committal service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol, VA where grandsons and church friends will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Suburban Christian Church, 20290 Wood Howell Road, Bristol, VA 24202.
