Mr. Marshall Fern Hatfield, 80, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2016 in Christian Care Center of Johnson City. Marshall was born October 29, 1936 in Faribault, Minnesota to the late Fern Onan Hatfield and the late Ella Mae Day Hatfield. Marshall moved to Abingdon in 1977 and he was retired from the United States Army. While serving in the Army, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Department of Defense Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He had also retired from the Division of Support Enforcement as a supervisor. Marshall was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Past-President of the Tri-Cities Nu Voice Club, and a member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Hatfield; three brothers, Stuart Hatfield, Leland Hatfield, and Harold Hatfield; and two sisters, Phyllis Lynch and Winnifred Fredrickson.
Marshall is survived by one son, Edward L. Able, Jr. and Pattie Prosser of Mrytle Beach, S.C.; three daughters, Alice Marie Honaker and husband Jack (Buddy) Honaker of Abingdon; Patricia Ann Parris and husband Alan Parris of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Elizabeth I. Dixon of Abingdon; one sister-in-law, Deloris Hatfield of Buffalo, Minn.; five grandchildren, Jack Edward Honaker , Christopher Dixon, Adam Eskridge, April Powers, and Samantha Able; and two great-grandchildren, Reagan Honaker and Logan Honaker.
Funeral services for Marshall will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2016 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Scott Homesley officiating. The family will receive friends at the Forest Hills Chapel from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military honors provided by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Viginia National Guard. Pallbearers will be members of Chapter 57 DAV. Honorary pallbearers will be John King, Linda King, Dr. Emory Robinette, Dr. Joseph Garrido, B.L. King, Dr. Ernest Henry, members of the Washington County Life Saving Crew and Abingdon Ambulance Service.
