Mary Crabtree Buchanan was born on April 8, 1925 and peacefully joined the Lord on July 27, 2011 at her home in Abingdon, Virginia.
She was a resident of Clintwood for most of her life, moving to Abingdon in her later years where she remained active as a volunteer for the food pantry at Highlands Fellowship Church. She graduated from Dickenson Memorial High School when she was 16, and then graduated from Carson Newman College when she was 19. She remained in Oak Ridge, Tennessee for a year after graduation where she worked on the Manhattan Project that ultimately led to the end of World War II. She returned to Dickenson County where she taught school. She was a devoted spouse to her husband, F.L. "Buck" Buchanan, Jr. for nearly 50 years, caring for him for several years prior to his death. She was a lifelong member of Clintwood Methodist Church where she faithfully served her Lord.
She is survived by her son, Alan C. Buchanan and wife, Glenna of Abingdon, her daughter, Aleta Buchanan Kiser and husband, Greg and two grandchildren, Alex Kiser and Olivia Kiser, all of Oak Ridge, North Carolina. She leaves behind many dear friends, fellow food pantry volunteers, and wonderfully supportive extended family members.
A Celebration Service will be held on Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 6 p.m. at Highlands Fellowship Church in Abingdon, Virginia in the Country Venue. Refreshments to follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Highlands Fellowship Food Pantry, PO 553, Abingdon, VA 24212.
