Abingdon, VA Mary Gail Corbett Brinson, age 60, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, at Johnston Memorial Hospital after an extended battle with cancer. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and leaves behind a legacy of love and faithfulness to her Lord, family, and friends. Gail was born in Newport News, VA. She graduated in 1976 with a Science Education Degree from the University of Georgia, where she met her husband, Clay Brinson. After teaching school in Georgia to help pay for her husband’s veterinary education, she and Clay moved to Abingdon where she later became the director of Kiddie Care College. She worked alongside her husband at Highlands Animal Hospital for many years and also provided in-home childcare for many children, including her grandchildren. She had a tremendous love for children and animals, as well as traveling with her husband and family. Gail was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Louise Verna. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 40 years, Clay; her father, William F. Corbett of Abingdon, VA; her son, Clayton Travis Brinson of Washington, D.C.; her daughters, Dana Barnard and husband Luke of Abingdon, VA, and Courtney Flood and husband Justin of Savannah, GA; three grandchildren, Mary Gianna Barnard, Gavin James Barnard, and Laurence Thomas Flood. The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Saturday, December 6, 2014, at Abingdon Bible Church, 16210 Elementary Drive, Abingdon, VA 24210. Funeral services will be held at the church on Sunday, December 7, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Paul Bufford officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Dr. John Roberts, Paul Quetsch, Dr. French Moore, III, David Scyphers, Robert “Buddy” Snodgrass, Rick Trask, James “Butch” Tritt and Tony Deal serving as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cornerstone Christian Academy Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 2228, Abingdon, VA 24212, in Mrs. Brinson’s name. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Timothy Davis, Dr. Tommy Sutton, Dr. Andrew Hawkins, Dr. T. Cummins, Dr. Emily Shields and all the nurses, staff and volunteers at Johnston Memorial Hospital and Cancer Center.
