Abingdon, Va.
Mary Maxine Vandergriff, age 89, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at English Meadows Senior Living. She was born in Logan County, WV and lived in Richlands for several years. In the early 1990’s she moved with her husband to Abingdon. Mary was a true homemaker. She loved, nurtured and cared for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Most importantly, she loved and supported her husband, Homer, who was a Church of God minister. She was always there for him and their congregation. The family happily remembers Mary driving the church van when they served at Jewell Ridge Church of God. After moving to Abingdon, Mary attended Trigg Street Church of God. As Homer’s health began to fail, she supported him in things that he liked to do. He loved to mow grass. When he was blind, Mary would walk beside him, guiding him as he rode his riding lawn mower. The family is at peace knowing that she is with her beloved Homer now.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Homer and her parents Boyd and Elizabeth Prince Eldridge.
She is survived by her sons Randall Vandergriff and wife Virginia of Salem, Va., and Homer Vandergriff and wife Susie of Jonesville, Va.; daughters Sharon Gilbert and husband Rick of Abingdon and Vera Long and husband Tim of Castlewood, Va.; grandchildren Sean Vandergriff and wife Carabeth, Eric Gilbert and wife Joy, Karin Moore and husband Sean, Elizabeth Burson and husband Jason, Morgan Vandergriff, Tara Vandergriff, Joshua Reedy and wife Natalie and Madeline Long; 12 great grandchildren.
