Mary Sue Salyer Herndon

Glade Spring, VA – Mary Sue Salyer Herndon, age 75, passed on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mary Sue was a graduate of Castlewood High School, worked as a certified nursing assistant at Grace Health Care for 34 years, and attended Faith Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Vince Gilmer Salyer and Mary Alice Cook Salyer; husband, Robert Herndon, Sr.; grandson, Cody Allen Herndon; brothers, Arthur Wayne Salyer and Arvil Salyer; and niece, Tammy Salyer.

Mary Sue is survived by two sons, Robert (Wilma) Herndon, Jr. of Chilhowie, VA and Steven Herndon of Glade Spring, VA; daughter, Gail (Terry) Compton of Glade Spring, VA; brother, Paul C. (Agnes) Salyer of Bristol, VA; sisters, Louise Osborne of Castlewood, VA and Nancy Price of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, T.J. (Kendra) Compton, Tyler Compton and fiancée Mary Rasnake, Taylor Herndon, and Gracie Herndon; great grandchildren, Kensleigh Compton, Austin Nunley, and Peyton Doss; special friend, Rebecca “Toots” Farris; special extended family, the Johnsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be held 2-3 p.m. Saturday, November 11, 2017, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Terry Compton and Rev. Stephen Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow in Old Glade Presbyterian Church Cemetery with T.J. Compton, Tyler Compton, Robert Compton, Justin Norton, Kenneth Herndon, and Randy Salyer serving as pallbearers. Richard Herndon will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
