Sue Young Payne, age 82, of Emory, VA passed away on Monday, November 12, 2012, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Ms. Payne was born May 15, 1930, in Sturgill, N.C., and grew up in Emory. She received a B.S. in English from Emory & Henry College in 1951. Sue and her family lived for many years in Williamsburg, VA and she returned to her childhood home of Emory 25 years ago.

She worked as a teacher and as a historical interpreter for Colonial Williamsburg and was also the owner/manager of "Payne's Party House" in Emory. A wonderful mother and grandmother as well as a talented artist, Sue loved to spend her leisure time playing duplicate bridge and painting. A well-known collector of vintage jewelry, it was physically impossible for Sue to pass by any yard sale or flea market. In her younger days, she was also an avid tennis player.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Mae and Worth Young; her brother John Worth Young, Jr.; her daughter, Lisa Payne Nestor; and her husband, Joe G. Payne.

Sue is survived by her son, Phillip and Robin of Richmond, VA; sister, Elizabeth Worthington of Chattanooga, TN.; brother, Phil and Lois of Poquoson, VA; grandchildren, Jack and Evelyn; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating Sue's life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 5, 2013, at the Emory & Henry College Chapel. A visitation and reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sue's memory to the Abingdon Senior Center in Abingdon, VA.
