Mary Virginia Maiden

Meadowview, VA Mary Virginia Nunley Maiden died peacefully Monday, September 29, 2014. She was born April 7, 1924, in Abingdon, Virginia, the third child to the late Lonnie Dayton Nunley, Sr. and Inez Gibson Nunley. Mary Maiden was a graduate of William King High School, and she attended Virginia Intermont College and Mary Frye Business School. She lived most of her life with her husband and children in Meadowview, Virginia, in the Maiden homeplace, where family would gather around the back porch table on Sunday afternoons. She was a long-time member of Meadowview United Methodist Church and was involved in many church and community activities over the years, including the Home Extension Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Patrick Henry High School Band Boosters, and the PTA. She was known to have a competitive but fun spirit, whether playing bridge with her late husband or playing croquet with her grandchildren in the back yard. She was well-known for her cooking and gardening and won a blue ribbon at the Washington County Fair for her yeast rolls. A favorite activity was attending college football games with her husband and close friends. She lived her life with grace and humility. She was beloved by her children, grandchildren, and all who knew her. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Maiden was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Bowman Maiden, Jr., and a brother, Harold Nunley. She is survived by her four children, Charles Milton Maiden of Abingdon; Mary Sue Maiden Smith and husband Randy Smith of Abingdon; Ann Maiden Wallace and husband James Wallace of Emory; and Carol Jean Maiden and Vienne Houck of Mt. Holly, NC.; four grandchildren, Ashley Smith of New York, NY; Sarah Smith of Winston-Salem, NC; Erin Wallace McQueen and husband Alex McQueen of Athens, GA; and Robert Wallace of New York, NY; one great-grandson, Alexander Paul McQueen of Athens, GA; her brother, Lonnie Dayton Nunley, Jr. of Bristol, VA; and her sister, Irene Nunley of Abingdon. A funeral service will be held Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at Meadowview United Methodist Church, 29043 Walker Lane in Meadowview. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the church just prior to the service. Interment will follow in Holston Conference Cemetery with Tommy Cook, Phil Dennison, Warren Lindsey, Alex McQueen, Randy Pennington, and Robert Wallace serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be former employees of H.B. Maiden & Sons. The family thanks the many caregivers at Abingdon Health and Rehabilitation Center for their care and compassion.
