Abingdon, VA- Max Reynolds Stanley, Sr., age 77, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at his home. He was born to the late Silas Webster Stanley and Edna McFadden Stanley on March 9, 1937 in Buchanan County, VA. Max owned and operated Stanley Motors and Epling Manufacturing in Buchanan County for several years before relocating to Abingdon, VA in 1992. He was an avid golfer having played in tournaments around the world including the first Pro-Am ever held in Portugal. Max also enjoyed flying and even obtained his pilot’s license. He knew the Lord as his Savior and was a deacon of First Christian Church in Abingdon. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and James Owens. Max is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, JoAnn McConville Hart Edwards Stanley; son, Max Reynolds Stanley, Jr. of Lewisville, NC; daughter, Cheryl Beth Grant and husband Clark of Pfafftown, NC; step-son, Roger Hart of Louisburg, NC; three step-daughters: Sharlene Hart Viers and husband Ray of Abingdon, VA; Lisa Hart Stacy and husband Gary of Grundy, VA; and Melinda Hart Harris and fiancé Richard Goodman of Bristol, VA; two grandchildren, Harrison and Reagan Grant; 11 step-grandchildren, Natasha, Jeremy, Sabrina, and Logan Viers, Danielle and Tyler Stacy, Cody Hart, Candace Stiltner, Jonah Berliner, Christopher Harris, and Peerless Goodman; and two step-great grandchildren, Layla Madelynn Lowe and Raelynn Belle Viers. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015 at First Christian Church. A funeral ceremony will be held at 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the church with Minister Tom Crise officiating. A committal service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 1st at Forest Hills Memory Gardens where Jonah Berliner, Richard Goodman, Cody Hart, Roger D. Hart, Ryan Overbay, Michael Ramey, Gary Stacy, Tyler Stacy, Jeremy Viers, and Ray Viers will serve as pallbearers. Clark and Harrison Grant will serve as honorary pallbearers. Those wishing to travel in procession from the church to the committal service are asked to meet at the church by 1:45 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 185 Old Jonesboro Road, Abingdon, VA 24210.
