Abingdon, VA – Mazie Lester Cook, age 94, a faithful Christian, passed on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Cook was a graduate of Big Creek High School in War, WV and graduated from the nursing program at Wytheville Community College at the age of 52. She worked as a Registered Nurse for many years at hospitals in Wytheville, Marion, Tazewell, and in Conway, SC. Mrs. Cook also served as a parish nurse for her church in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was a member of Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church, served as the president of River Oaks Condominiums in Myrtle Beach, SC, and was a member of the Abingdon Civitan Club where she once used her nursing skills to save a life during a meeting. Mrs. Cook enjoyed traveling and toured all 48 continental states with her late husband, Lindsey Fred Cook. Her greatest pride was in her grandsons and their accomplishments.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Cook is preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Mae Shupe Lester; son, Terry Eugene Cook; and brothers, Edgel Lester and Eugene Lester.
She is survived by her son, Allen and wife Renna Smith Cook of Abingdon, VA; sisters: Cleo Gardner and husband Clifton of Atkins, VA; Ronnie Jean McDaniel and husband Henry of Floyd, VA; and Cathy Spencer and husband Dan of Ballard, W. Va.; grandchildren: Shea Cook, Esq. and wife Ginger of Richlands, VA, Col. Matthew Cook, U.S.M.C., of Washington, D.C., Lt. Col. Aaron Cook, M.D., U.S.A.F., (currently serving in Afghanistan) and wife Marisa of San Antonio, TX, and Nathan Cook, Esq. and wife Christine of Wilmington, DE; and eight great grandchildren: Amelia, Claire, Logan, Erin, Christian, Siena, Virginia, and Vera Cook.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 26, 2017, in the Roselawn Cemetery Mausoleum, Princeton, WV, with Rev. Alan Moor officiating. There will be no visitation prior to the service.
Mrs. Cook established a scholarship fund in honor of her mother and in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Mae Lester Nursing Scholarship Fund at Wytheville Community College, Attn: Foundation Office, 1000 East Main Street, Wytheville, VA 24382.
