Melissa entered this world on November 6, 1963 and departed to her eternal home on July 5, 2018 after a lengthy battle with a chronic illness. Melissa is preceded in death by her parents Wayne and Mildred Crosswhite; sister Patricia; and grandparents, Lawry and Grace Crosswhite and Monroe and Roxie Widner.
She is survived by her sister Wanda Lloyd and husband Gary. Her pride and joy are her nieces and nephew (Matthew Lloyd and wife Leighann, niece Brittany Lloyd, all of Glade Spring, Va.). She adored her great-niece Elizabeth Grace Lloyd (daughter of Matthew and Leighann). Her extended family includes many cousins, aunts, and uncles as well as innumerable friends that she called family. Of those friends and relatives, a few were of upmost importance to Melissa and they include her aunt Shirley Widner of Glade Spring, Va.; cousins Jay and Olivia Wilkinson of Chilhowie, Va. and Austin Widner of Saltville, Va.
A lifelong native of Washington and Smyth Counties, she was known as a caring and loving soul that impacted many people in immeasurable ways. It has been said that she never met a stranger.
Melissa’s family will receive family and friends on Sunday, July 8, 2018, from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm at Farris Funeral Service 427 E. Main Street, Abingdon, Va. or at any time at the home of Gary and Wanda in Glade Spring. The funeral service will be held on Monday, July 9 at 11:00 am at Little Rock Baptist Church of Glade Spring with Bro. Buster Mullins, Bro. Bradley Tilson, and Rev. Matthew Lloyd officiating. The church will be open an hour before the service for further visitation.
The graveside committal will take place at Rush Creek Cemetery in Glade Spring, Va. Her pallbearers will be Glen “Cotton” Crosswhite, Ken Crosswhite, Joe Widner Jr., Jackie Widner, Jamie Wilkinson, and Don Ashby. Honorary pallbearers will include Eddie Widner, Austin Widner, and Jay Wilkinson.
The family wishes to express their deepest thanks to Dr. Ernest Henry and Dr. Emory Robinette of Abingdon, Va. and Dr. Andrew Mihalek and the various patient care teams of UVA Medical Center for their care of Melissa through the past few years.
