Mildred Anne “Millie” Woody, age 92, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Friday, April 19, 2019, at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, Va. She was born July 1, 1926, to the late Fred Pickens Edwards and Lula Jones Edwards in Asheville, N.C. After relocating to Bluefield, W.Va., Millie attended Beaver High School where she was active in her school and church choir. Her favorite pastime was attending baseball games with her father.
Upon graduation, she enrolled in the Home Economics program at Ohio Wesleyan University and became a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and remained active in her local chapter until her health declined.
After graduating from O.W.U., Millie was employed as a Home Economist for Appalachian Power Company. One of her many duties was to travel all over McDowell County, W. Va. and teach women how to use the latest appliance invention, the electric stove.
Millie and her husband moved to Abingdon in 1954 and she became very involved with her church as well as many civic organizations, bridge clubs, book lovers and the Random Arts Clubs.
After her children were born, Millie was a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader, PTA President, Band Booster president and horse show mom.
One of the Millie’s greatest honors was to become the first female Lay Leader in the Abingdon United Methodist Church. She remained active in her church until her health no longer permitted her to attend.
In addition to her parents, Millie was also preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Landon M. Woody. She is survived by two daughters, Susan W. Buckner and Judy W. (Carson) Jackson, all of Abingdon; and two grandsons, Landon (Ashley Huffman) Jackson and Wesley (Jessica) Jackson.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Glenn Patterson officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be on Monday, April 22, 2019, from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.
