Mildred J. "Suzy" Stovall Martin

October 26, 1949 — August 31, 2021

Mildred J. “Suzy” Stovall Martin, age 71, of Meadowview, VA, passed away on August 31, 2021 at Valley Healthcare in Chilhowie, VA. Born on October 26, 1949 in Smyth County, VA and raised in the Price’s Bridge area of Glade Spring, VA, Mildred was the daughter of and one of eight children to James and Bina (Norris) Stovall.

A graduate of Patrick Henry High School and Wytheville Community College, Suzy followed in her mother’s footsteps and pursued the profession of nursing. She began her career at Smyth County Hospital in Marion, VA. In 1972, she and her husband moved to Anchorage, Alaska where she continued nursing at Sisters of Providence Hospital. Upon moving back to Virginia and settling in Emory, VA in 1983, Suzy continued nursing on a more personal level, caring for many on both sides of her family. She had a God-given gift of caring that will never be forgotten by all who were touched by her presence.

Suzy had many interests and talents. She was a wonderful cook and an avid reader. She enjoyed flowers, family reunions, and her heart was always bent toward her furry companions. She was dedicated to her church, Blackwell Chapel UMC, and while healthy was actively involved where-ever needed. Most of all, she loved her family and friends.

Suzy was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers James Stovall, Jr., William “Billy” Stovall, Eugene Stovall; and sisters Ruby (Mack) Clark, Mary (Earl) Sheppard.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Martin of Meadowview, VA; sister Helen Lane of Chesapeake, VA, brother Howard Stovall and wife Judy of Glade Spring, VA; sister-in-law Tammy Martin of Emory, VA and many nieces and nephews.

Special gratitude to: Mike and Judy Hoback, Peggy Eddy, Bonnie Atwell, Nancy and Warren Kennedy, Jimmy and Linda Sheppard, Jerry and Sheryl Sheppard, Dr. Douglas Pote, Dr. Matthew Beasey, Pharmacist Mark Wilkinson, the nursing and therapy staff of Valley Healthcare, the nursing staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital, Chilhowie Nursing Service and all transport technicians that have provided care over time.
