Mildred Preston St Leger

Mildred Preston St. Leger, 91, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Abingdon, VA, died at home on November 25, 2022 following a short illness. 

Mildred was known for great perseverance throughout her life. She started working in the medical records department at Johnston Memorial Hospital as a teenager, and was ultimately elected by her peers as President of the American Health Information Management Association. She also worked at Virginia Baptist Hospital, and furthered the careers of hundreds of students in the profession by teaching at Central Virginia Community College, and Jefferson College of Health Sciences. She was a graduate of William King High School and King University. 

Mildred considered herself to be stoic, but to her family and friends she was a tender caregiver, trusted confidante, hard worker, voracious reader, strategic thinker, gracious hostess, cheerful giver, and faithful Christian. She was an active Member of First Presbyterian Church, Richmond, and a former Member of First Presbyterian Church, Lynchburg. She was also a former Member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder and the Clerk of the Session. 

Mildred is survived by her daughter Hannah Gray, son-in-law David Gray, and adoring grandchildren Anne and Walter Gray, of Richmond, Va., as well as many devoted cousins, nieces, and nephews. 

Mildred was predeceased by her parents, Brad and Evelyn Preston; grandparents, George and Bessie Preston and Trigg and Eva Clark; and her former husband John St. Leger. She was the youngest of four siblings who passed before her and whom she loved dearly and missed heartily: Phyllis Buchanan, Don Preston, and Frank Preston. 

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church with Rev. Kevin Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at Green Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
