Mrs. Myrtle E. Johnson went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Baptist Church of Boone. She enjoyed her life's work as a cook at Emory and Henry College, but she also worked out of her home caring for her grandchildren and others.
She was born in Caldwell County, NC and later relocated to Glade Spring, VA.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester Johnson; two sons, Timothy Lee Johnson and Jesse James West; daughter, Beatrice Whittington; three brothers; seven sisters; son-in-law, Kyle Bradley; brother-in-law, Ezekiel Johnson; and sister-in-law, Hannah Preston.
She is survived by four daughters, Anita Lockhart, Velma Branch, Janet Hagler, all of Glade Spring, VA, and Barbara Bradley of Meadowview, VA; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; her fifth daughter, Lillian White; and special niece, Margaret Davis.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mrs. Johnson's caregiver, Joyce Puckett, whom she loved dearly.
A going home service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Mt. Calvary Community Church, with Minister Barbara Bradley officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Rose Cemetery where grandsons, Kris Barnes, Douglas Hagler, James Hagler, and Randy Hagler, Corey Large, and Kenneth Wright will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Coalson, Danny Hounshell, Shane Mutter, James Whitt, and Jeremy Wright.
