Naomi Alexandra Vanlear Thomas

NAOMI ALEXANDRA VANLEAR THOMAS, (Van), 96, Meadowview, Va. died Wednesday, July 6 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Reeves and Ralph Weber in Asheville, NC.

Naomi was born on Aug. 31, 1914 in Warm Springs, Bath County, Va. and moved to Meadowview Va. in 1938 where she lived her remaining life. She was a long time member of the Meadowview United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of W.A. and Daisey Vanlear of Staunton Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William Reeves Thomas, her son, Robert Vinston Thomas, 7 sisters and 2 brothers.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Gladys Zarou Thomas of Sarasota, FL; 7 children and their spouses: William Reeves Thomas, Jr. (Jeanie Johnston )of Atlanta, GA; Joseph VanLear Thomas (Eloise Orr) of Johnson City, TN; Robert's wife, Hazel Hopkins Thomas of Piney Flats, TN; Gerald David Thomas (Cassandra Steffey) of Johnson City, TN; John Charles Thomas (Linda Honeycutt) of Colonial Heights, VA; Mary Reeves Thomas Weber (Ralph Weber) of Asheville, NC; Evelyn Thomas Silliman (James Silliman) of Bardstown, KY; and James Emmett Thomas (Holly Hawthorne) of Meadowview, VA. In addition, she is survived by 16 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received by the family at the Meadowview United Methodist Church at 12:00 noon on Sat., July 9th. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm at the church with graveside services to follow at the Holston Conference Cemetery, Emory, VA. Funeral services will be presented by Rev. Barbara Farmer, associate pastor Pleasant View United Methodist Church.

Donations to the Meadowview United Methodist Church are welcomed. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Care Partners Health Services of Asheville, NC, and to all who held Van in their thoughts and prayers during her final days. Van was known community-wide as a woman of faith, integrity, and all encompassing love.
