Oscar "Vernon" Cook, 82, passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at his home in Glade Spring.
Vernon was born May 1, 1927, in Washington County, VA to the late Carl and Ruth Widener Cook. He was a member of Scenic Park Baptist Church in Bristol and of York Lodge #12 AF and AM of Bristol. Vernon served in the United States Army during World War II. He enjoyed wildlife, farming, gardening and he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Widener Cook and his brothers, Clayton, Herbert, and Ernest Cook.
Survivors include one son, Mark E. Cook of Damascus, VA; one daughter, Myra D. Cook of Abingdon; one grandson, Hunter D. Cook of Damascus; two brothers, Charles Cook and Robert Cook both of Damascus; four sisters, Rebecca Heath of Meadowview, Mary Thomas of Abingdon, Martha Dolinger and Eleanor Dolinger both of Glade Spring; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 8 pm in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Evangelist Bob Steele officiating. A graveside service will be held on Monday, April 5, 2010 at 11 am at Mt. View Cemetery, 1019 E. Valley Dr., Bristol, VA with military honors conducted by Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:55. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 pm on Saturday.
