Patrick Douglas Callebs

March 20, 1942 — March 13, 2025

Abingdon, VA

Patrick Douglas Callebs, 82, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2025. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was known for his quick wit, hundreds of expressions and jokes, keen business sense, and love for his family and friends.

Pat was born in English, West Virginia, on March 20, 1942, to the late Estel and Goldie Callebs. He was the youngest in his family and was preceded in death by his brothers Harold "Sam" Callebs, John Callebs, Jerry Callebs, and his sister Mary "Jackie" McCord.

Pat graduated from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., in 1964 with a mining engineering degree. Upon his return from two years in the Army, he worked for national and global energy companies in various management capacities throughout West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Virginia from the late 1960s through the early 1980s, when he settled with his family in Abingdon, VA.

In the mid-1980s, Pat joined his wife Patty at Callebs Realty, working in commercial, industrial, land, retail, and residential development in the Tri-Cities. Pat served on virtually every committee and office in the Tennessee Virginia Association of Realtors, including president. He served on the IDA board (Washington County Virginia Industrial Development Authority), which he enjoyed immensely, and he loved mentoring others as an instructor of commercial and residential real estate at many colleges in the area. In addition to managing the Bristol Callebs Realty office, Pat was a co-developer of Wallace Meadows in Bristol, VA, Callebs Cove Campground LLC in Abingdon, VA, and had commercial and residential property ownership and investment in Bristol, VA and TN under The State Street Group LLC.

More than anything, Pat valued his family and friends. His generosity of spirit and gregarious nature ensured he never met a stranger. Over the years, many visited or had extended stays with Pat and Patty, who always had an open door and open arms.

Pat loved attending the events his family was involved in. He came to many music events to hear his son's band play, art events at his daughter's gallery, and school and sports events for his grandchildren. He and his wife Patty traveled extensively for work and pleasure. Most of all, Pat adored his wife of 59 years, Patty. He liked to say, "We did alright for two kids from the mountains."

Left to cherish Pat's memory are his wife, Patty Callebs, two children, Andrea Hobé and her husband, Bob, and son Douglas Callebs and his wife, Heather. His grandchildren are John Jennings and Ella Callebs. Special gratitude for caregiver Pam Mills and Seth Wilson from Senior Helpers.

The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Home on Monday, March 17, 2025, from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.   A private committal service with military rites will be conducted at a later date in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, alz.org.
