Ralph Eugene Marbury Jr.

Ralph Eugene Marbury, Jr., 88, passed away Friday, April 27, 2012, at the Cambridge House in Bristol, TN. Mr. Marbury was born December 5, 1923 in Edgewood, PA to the late Ralph Eugene and Ruth Catherine Burt Marbury. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Marveen Nora (Coleman) Marbury; sisters, Nancy Lee (Marbury) Petrone and Patricia Ann Marbury.

Ralph was a graduate of Wilkensburg High School and the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science Degree where he was a member of Theta Chi.

He served in WWII European Theatre of WWII from March 1, 1943 - December 7, 1945. Receiving WWII Sergeant Stripes Pair; American Campaign WW II FS; American Campaign WWII Ribbon; Europe Africa Mid East (ETO) F; Europe Africa Mid East (ETO) R: 3/16' Silver Star; WWII Victory FS; WWII Victory Ribbon; Belgian Croix De Guerre; Belgian Croix De Guerre WWII Ri; Army Good Conduct FS; Army Good Conduct Ribbon, WWII Discharge Pin-Ruptured Du; Patch 1st Armoured Div FC w/Ta; Belgian Fouraguerre.

After college and military service, Mr. Marbury joined the Koppers Company, Inc., and served 37 years in the finance department as treasurer and as manager of the accounting services before his retirement in 1987.

His retirement years brought him to Abingdon, VA and kept him busy in the community volunteer service as a Member and Elder of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church and then later a member of Glade Spring Presbyterian Church. In addition, he was also active with the General William Campbell Chapter of the National Society of Sons of the American Revolution and by being a descendant of Samuel Shy of the South Carolina Militia, the Over Mountain Victory Trail, Virginia Highland Society, the Cave House and the Abingdon Rotary. Ralph served as treasurer of the Historical Society of Washington County, VA, was a member of the Depot Artists Association, and was an alumnus of the University of Pittsburg, PA.

He is survived by his wife, DAR, Ina (Corder) Stephenson-Marbury of Bristol, TN; daughter, Linda Lee (Marbury) and husband James Lowry "Rock" White of Abingdon, VA; son, Robert Edward Marbury and wife Cathy J. (Dugas) Marbury of Alphretta, GA; step-daughter, DAR, Karen Ivy (Stephenson) Gunter and husband Donald Hugh Gunter of Tucker, GA; step-son, NSSAR, Compatriot, Hugh Andrew Stephenson, III and wife Iris Ray (Mott) Ellis Stephenson of Port Clinton, OH; granddaughter, Jane Poythress White of Abingdon, VA; grandsons, Daniel Robert Marbury and Steven David Marbury of Alphretta, GA; step-granddaughters, Mrs. Mandi Lee (Ellis) Snyder and Mrs. Kaitlyn Ivy Stephenson Gonzales (Johnathon A.) and son Lex Kingston Gonzales of Port Clinton, OH; nieces, Carol Lynn (Kielar) Brown of VA, Sandi Skandera of Delmont, PA, and Kim Pattinson and husband Joe of Indianapolis, IN; brother-in-law, NSSAR, Compatriot, Phillip C. Corder Maj (Ret) USA and wife DAR, Sarah C. Corder; sister-in-law, DAR, Nina (Corder) Isley of Bristol, TN; and special friends, Kevin Stamp, Beverly Carter, and Cheryl King.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 P.M., Monday, April 30, 2012 at Old Glade Spring Presbyterian Church with Rev. Timothy E. Bird officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 P.M.-4:00 P.M., Monday, April 30, 2012 at the church NSSAR, Compatriots, President Walter Blair Keller, Jr. and Secretary John Milton Elliott will serve as NSVAR, Honor Guards. A private committal service will be held at Forest Hills Memory Gardens at a later date. Honorary pallbearers will be NSSAR, Compatriot, Phillip C. Corder Maj (Ret) USA, NSSAR, Compatriot, Hugh A. Stephenson, III, Donald Hugh Gunter, James Lowry White, Daniel Robert Marbury, and Steven David Marbury.

Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard and NSSAR, Compatriot, Robert Lee Saunders, III Maj (Ret) USMC will present the colors. The Over the Mountain Men and the General William Campbell Chapter of the National Society of Sons of the American Revolution will be in attendance.
