Renalda "Bertie" Carter, 86, passed away at his home on Monday, April 4, 2011.
He was born in Saltville, VA and grew up in Broadford, VA. Mr. Carter was a member of Meadowview United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during WWII aboard the USS Kearny, a destroyer. After the war, he worked as a coal miner in Gary, West Virginia, and then as a carpenter and superintendent for Richard E. Phillipi Construction.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Hubert and Florida Dye Carter; his wife, Dorothy T. Carter; a grandson, Kevin A. Carter; sister, Arlie Lamie; brother, William J. Carter, and daughter-in-law, Maureen O'Hagan Carter.
He is survived by his son, Dale Carter and wife, Nancy Gentry Carter and their daughters, Megan and Lori; his daughter, Judy Carter of Abingdon; his son, Scott Carter and his children, Andrea, Michael, Lauren and Sarah Carter and stepson, James Wilson and step grandsons, Noah and Nathan; his son Mark Carter and wife, Tammy Longworth Carter of Bluff City, TN; sister, Inez McCray and husband, Branson of Abingdon; brothers, Frank Carter of Bristol, TN, Joe Carter and wife, Margaret of Abingdon, and Al Carter and wife, Judy of Broadford, VA; sisters-in-law, Dorothy L. Carter and Sue T. Watson; brother-in-law, Tom Trentadue and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Farris Funeral Service from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 5, 2011. A committal service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Rosedale Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. David Jackson officiating. Those attending are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 1:50 P.M.
