Richard C. "Shrimp" Buchanan, born Aug.4, 1933, in Smyth County, Va., passed away on Monday, March 5, 2012. He was preceded in death by parents Raymond M. Buchanan, Sr., and Lila B. Buchanan and brothers, Patrick Buchanan and Tate Buchanan.
He is survived by wife Lois B. Buchanan; sons Rick Buchanan and wife Pam and Jeff Buchanan and wife Becky; grandchildren Mindy and husband John King, Gina and husband Brian Hutchinson, and Codie; brothers Raymond M. Buchanan, Jr., and wife Janavee of Saltville, Va., and Preston Buchanan and wife Arlene of Honaker, Va.; and
sister Nancy B. Durham of Blountstown, Fla.
Richard was a member of Glade Spring Presbyterian Church where he taught the men's Sunday school class for more than 20 years. He served two years in the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and Radford University. Richard was a member of the football hall of fame at Emory &
Henry and the Smyth County Sports Hall of Fame.
He was a retired teacher, coach and principal of Washington Co. Virginia schools
Richard was a fisher of large fish and a dancer of square dances. He loved his morning breakfast club.
Funeral services will be conducted at Glade Spring Presbyterian Church at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, March 8, 2012 with Rev. Timothy Bird officiating. Graveside services will follow at Rich Valley Presbyterian Church. Pallbearers are Tom Buchanan, Bo Buchanan, Ira Buchanan, Eddie Briggs, John King, and Brian Hutchinson. Honorary pallbearers are Clark Hutton, Gary Dutton, Tony
Rector, Gene Moser, John Carter, Charles Byrd, Benny Tolley, Barry Tolley, and Tom Gentry.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon, Va.
