Richard Kent Sturgill

On March 2, 2024, Richard (Rick) Kent Sturgill passed away at the age of 56. He died peacefully at home.

Rick is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Kimberly Sutherland Sturgill, as well as their loving children, Roby Kent Sturgill, Jacob Hampton Sturgill and Charlie Scott Sturgill. He is also survived by his father, Roger Sturgill of Chilhowie, VA and brother Steve Sturgill of Abingdon, VA. Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Judy Sturgill. 

Rick was born on October 7, 1967, in Fort Meade, MD. He graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1990. After graduation Rick worked in the financial services industry before embarking on a career in contracting with Paul Davis Restoration. Following more than 10 years learning the trade and organizational aspects of the business, Rick and his brother Steve started Mountain Empire Restoration in 2007. This work would define the remainder of his business career, employing countless friends and colleagues and providing critical, dependable service to those who faced catastrophic loss due to harsh weather and other circumstances. Rick never hesitated to support individuals when they needed a hand. 

Rick was also a beloved member of his community and provided service in a number of ways. He spent countless hours coaching and mentoring young people, particularly in the youth football community of Abingdon. Some of Rick’s happiest times were spent on the sideline or in the stands watching his boys compete on the football field, and he loved being a mentor and father figure to numerous young people in the local community. 

The family will host a memorial service for Rick at the Emory and Henry College Chapel in Emory, VA on Saturday, March 9 at 11:00 a.m., with a burial to follow at Grosses Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Chilhowie, VA.  A viewing for friends and family will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. at the Emory and Henry College Chapel in Emory, VA.
