Robert Lee “Bob” Steele, Sr. passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Johnston Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Bob was a native of Buchanan County, Va. and moved to Abingdon 20 years ago. He was a lifelong coal miner, working at the Five Oaks, Lester, Race Fork, and Permack mines. At the time of his retirement, he was a general manager. Bob celebrated his Christian faith daily. As time from his work and family permitted, he enjoyed playing golf.
Bob was predeceased by his parents Alonzo and Myrtle Chambers Steele; brothers Ralph and Donnie Steele; and sisters Ruth Smith and Fran Stiltner.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis Taylor Steele; son Robert Lee Steele, Jr. and wife Joy of Vansant, Va.; daughters Pat Childress and husband Anthony of Bristol, Va., and Leigh Ann Steele of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and grandchildren Katelyn, Brooke, Trey and Chase.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2019 in Mausoleum #4, Greenhills Memory Gardens (11800 Gov. George C. Perry Highway, Cedar Bluff, VA) with Pastor Douglas Findley officiating. Interment will follow the service in the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorial contributions be made to Pilgrim Baptist Church, 16438 Pilgrim Way, Abingdon, VA 24211.
