Robert Deel of Abingdon, VA, age 90, passed away December 2, 2009, at Johnston Memorial Hospital surrounded by family. He was born in Buchanan County, Virginia on May 4, 1919 to the late Emory Floyd and Nancy Jane Deel. Prior to moving to the Abingdon area, he lived in Haysi and Richlands, Virginia. He was a retired coal miner, having worked at Harman Mining for a number of years.
He was a lifelong and dedicated member of the Old Regular Baptist Church. He proudly served his country as a World War II veteran and fought in the Battle of the Bulge during the war. He was preceded in death by a son, Dewey Deel of Bluefield, Virginia.
Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Carol Deel; his sons: Randy Deel and wife Della of Haysi, Virginia; Ernie Deel and wife Merri of Charleston, South Carolina; and Ray Deel of Abingdon, Virginia; two daughters: Linda Springer of Abingdon, Virginia, and Sandra Kane and husband Fred of Nashville, Tennessee. His grandchildren include Lisa Deel of Bristol, Virginia and Amanda and Olivia Kane of Nashville, Tennessee. He also is survived by two brothers, Emory Deel of Johnson City, Tennessee, and George Deel of Haysi, Virginia, and one sister, Rosie Deel of Haysi, Virginia.
The family will be receiving friends and family from 6:00 â?? 8:00 pm at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway in Abingdon on Friday, December 4. The funeral will be conducted by Roger Coleman on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Forest Hills Chapel, and burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
