Robert Legard May

Abingdon, Va. – Robert Legard May, 92, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mr. May served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII on the Island of Guam. He worked for the Virginia Dept. of Forestry for many years and later worked for Pittson Coal Company.

Mr. May is preceded in death by his parents, William and Anne Davis May; brother, Maj. William L. May, Jr., U.S.M.C. Ret.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Eva Rutherford Deyerle and Walter Deyerle; brothers-in-law, Robert Turner, Gordon Thomas, and Robert Sechrist; and sisters-in-law, Joyce Matchett, Faye Sechrist, June Fisher, and Judy Deyerle.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sherrye Deyerle May; son David May and wife Karen of Church Hill, Tenn.; daughter Suzanne Preston and husband Byrd of Abingdon, Va.; grandchildren Adam May, Elizabeth May, Brad May, Rachel Nelson and husband Josh, Randi Rhoten and husband Jim, and Ronnie Preston and wife Bridget; great-grandchildren Aiden May, Liam May, and Gavin May; eight step-great-grandchildren; brothers- and sisters-in-law Walt and Elane Deyerle, Norm Matchett, Patricia Turner LaVerne Deyerle, and Ira Deyerle; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be held 1-2 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2017, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, Va.. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Joel Long officiating. Entombment will follow in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
