Robert William Brumback, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at Valley Healthcare Center. He was born February 10, 1918 to the late Ohmer William Brumback and Nellie Reynolds Brumback in Midway, KY.
At the age of 17 Mr. Brumback enlisted in the National Guard's 121st Calvary. He spent 5 years in the National Guard before joining the United States Navy where he served for 16 years. At the time of his discharge, he was a Chief Petty Gunnery Officer and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor while aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma. Aside from his military career, he also served his community by cutting grass for two different churches.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Ruth Maynard Brumback, brother, Harry William Brumback, and three sisters, Bertha, Lucille, and Elizabeth.
He is survived by one son, James Robert Brumback and wife Lisa of Mendota, VA; one daughter, Theresa White and husband Greg of Tallahassee, FL; four grandchildren, Lani White, Kim White, Danielle Holton, and Chase Brumback; two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be the men who served on the U.S.S. Oklahoma during the attack on Pearl Harbor. It is Mr. Brumback's wish to be cremated following the service. Visitation with the family will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Saturday at the funeral home just prior to the service.
