Roger Lee “Puncher” Shortridge, Sr., age 71, died Sunday, October 11, 2020, at his home in Abingdon, Va. Mr. Shortridge was born June 10, 1949, in Hurley, Va. to Luther Shortridge and Opal Sullivan Shortridge. He served in the United States Army and gave his life to the Lord. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, kids, and grandkids. He also liked reading his Bible, collecting knives, and working in his garden. He was a member of Chestnut Grove Community Church in Hidden Valley.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Tester Shortridge; two daughters, Valerie Hurley and husband, Eric, and Susan Moore; two sons, Roger Lee Shortridge, Jr. and wife, Tanisha, and Matthew Shortridge and wife, Emma; 12 grandchildren, Hope, Dylan, Chanelle, Armani, Versace, Autumn, Ja ‘Von, Jazmyne, Erika, Donnie, Madison, Izaeah, and Adun; three brothers, Fonnie Boyd and wife, Beulah, and Lonnie Boyd and wife, Joanne, and Johnny Shortridge; three sisters, Kathy Robinette, Sharon Hurley, and Shirley Shortridge and companion, Jimmy Stacy.
A graveside service will be held on the family property on Friday, October 16, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard. The family will hold a wake at their home on Wednesday and Thursday evening and will receive guests between the hours of 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. each night.
Pallbearers will be selected from the family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Nate Atkins, Jack Combs, Eric Hurd, Eric Hurley, Kenneth Taylor, Mikey Tester, and the brethren of the Chestnut Grove Community Church.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Fresenius Kidney Care and the Mountain Home VA Healthcare System in Johnson City and Bristol.
