Roland Preston Lester "Pappy", age 89, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at his home with family.
He was born to the late Ernest Minter Lester and Elizabeth Viola Ratliff Lester in Glade Spring, VA. He retired from Brunswick Corporation in 1988 to work full time on the dairy farm with his brothers. He was a member of Old Glade Presbyterian Church and a proud veteran of the United States Army.
He is also preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Hazel Rebecca Ratcliff Lester; and two sisters, Lucille Kelly and Martha Lester.
He is survived by his son, Robert E. Lester "Butch" and wife Brenda of Chilhowie; three brothers, Jay Lester and wife JoAnn, Scott Lester and wife Linda, and Fred Lester and wife Peggy all of Glade Spring, VA; four sisters, June Lester, Agnes Lester, Ann Lester all of Glade Spring, VA and Bea Mason of Chilhowie; one granddaughter, Meagan Lester (Dada's little girl); three step-grandchildren, Dustin Bowman, Chad Bowman, and Beth Cato; four step great grandchildren, Lily Bowman, Samuel Bowman, Isaac Bowman, and Chance Lowe.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00a.m., Friday, September 7, 2012 at Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery, 33234 Lee Highway, Glade Spring, VA 24340, with Reverend Timothy E. Byrd and the Reverend Doctor Jack Garland officiating. Highlands Veterans Honor Guard will present Military Honors. Those who wish to attend graveside services are asked to convene at 10:45a.m., Friday at the cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 6, 2012 at Old Glade Presbyterian Church.
Pallbearers will be Jake Lester, Dustin Bowman, Chad Bowman, Jimmy Parks, Matt Smith, and Wayne Ratliff. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Old Glade Presbyterian Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 301 Valley Street Northeast, Abingdon, VA 24210. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the third floor staff of Smyth County Community Hospital and the staff of the Johnston Memorial Comprehensive Cancer Center especially Pam "Valentine".
