Roy Kenneth Holmes, age 84, of Hampton, Va., passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018, after a brief illness. Kenneth, born in Russell County, Va. on March 16, 1933, was the son of the late Ralph Holmes and Sally Jessee Holmes.
Raised in Russell and Washington Counties, Kenneth graduated from Emory & Henry College in 1956 and moved to Hampton, Va. after accepting a position with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (which became NASA in 1958), as a Mathematician. After retiring from NASA, Kenneth enjoyed collecting antiques as well as building and playing with model trains. Married for 62 years to his wife, Shirley, they lived in Hampton, Va., building a loving life for themselves and their two children.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Price Holmes; son, Randy Holmes (Linda) of Hampton, Va.; daughter, Kim Slusar (Peter) of Abingdon, Md.; sister, Mary Holmes Akers of Abingdon, Va.; two grandsons, Ken Holmes and Johnathan Slusar (Amber); granddaughter, Melanie Slusar of Tampa, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held in the First United Methodist Church in Fox Hill, Va. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund at First United Methodist Church of Fox Hill, 1 Salt Pond Rd., Hampton VA 23664.
