Ruth Crewey Alley, age 92, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, June 29, 2012 at her home. Mrs. Alley was born in Saltville, VA and was employed by the U.S. Army Signal Intelligence Service as a civilian during WWII. Ruth married Dwight Alley in 1948 and spent the first 28 years of her married life in Arlington, VA where she was employed by Arlington County Schools for 20 years.
Ruth and Dwight settled in Abingdon, VA in 1974 where she became a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star and a volunteer at the Washington County Food Bank. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Ray and Mazie Burchett Crewey, four brothers, and four sisters.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Dwight Alley; two sons, Tim (Catherine) Alley of Bristol, VA and Jim (Ann) Alley of Fairfax Station, VA; two step-daughters, Alice (Bob) Joplin and Susan (Jim) Smith both of Clearwater, FL; one sister, Kathleen Vaught of Twin Falls, ID; four grandchildren, Tim, Jason, Kristen and Jeff; four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Brian, Logan and Naomi.
Funeral services will be held at 7:30 P.M. Monday, July 2, 2012, at Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Sherry Boles officiating. Entombment will follow at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Tim Alley, Jason Alley, Jeff Alley, Leslie Snyder, Scott Stosser and Jeff Stosser serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Abingdon United Methodist Church's Wesley Bible Class.
Visitation with the family will be held from 5:00-7:30 P.M. Monday evening at the church just prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, 950 West Faris Street, Greenville, SC 29605, in Mrs. Alley's name.
