Ruth Hilt Ringstaff, age 102, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at her home.
After graduating from Burke's Garden High School in 1927, she received her Bachelor's Degree from Radford College. She did graduate work at Appalachian University and at William and Mary College. She was a teacher in the schools of Tazewell, Wise, and Scott Counties and the City of Bristol, VA for a total of 46 years. She loved teaching and her interest in former students and education remained with her throughout the years. She was a member of the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International for more than 40 years. Another special interest for most of her life was Bible study. She had many courses both in college and in church to help in this area. She encouraged others of all ages to love the Holy Word and to share it. She was an associate member of Abingdon United Methodist Church; however, her letter of membership remained with Crabtree Chapel United Methodist Church in Tannersville, VA.
She was born the oldest child of the late William E. Hilt and Mattie Rhudy Hilt in Tazewell County, VA on May 3, 1910. She was the widow of Carl Everett Ringstaff. She is also preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Hilt, Edward Hilt, and Rhudy Hilt; three sisters, Elsie Yost, Georgia Ellis, and Helen Widener. She was the last surviving member of her family.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Ayleen Dresser Hilt of Fort Collins, CO, and Evelyn Griffitts Hilt of Abingdon, VA. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, who were very close to her and whom she loved very much, Blake Yost and wife Judy of Mars Hill, NC, Harry Yost and wife Becky of Richmond, VA, Fred Hackney and wife Carolyn of Pearisburg, VA, Martha Jo Caldwell and husband Jim of Spindale, NC, Ayleen Burns and husband Denver of Fort Collins, CO, Roy W. "R.W." Hilt and wife Jane of Abingdon, VA, Charles Hilt and wife Alice of Grand Rapids, MI, Donald Hilt and wife Tammy of Tannersville, VA, Ralph Hilt and wife Sandy of Tannersville, VA. In addition to these Hilt relatives she is survived by Laura Phipps and husband Stewart of Abingdon, VA and Judy Maxwell and husband Chesley of Kernersville, NC, of her husband's family.
Visitation will be from 12:00-2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Abingdon United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday at the church with Reverend Sherry Boles officiating. Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens where her great nieces and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Kinsman Sunday School Class of Abingdon United Methodist Church.
