Abingdon, VA – Samuel M. Van Dyke, age 97, passed on Wednesday, June 26, 2019, in Commonwealth Assisted Living. Sam was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII where he served in the Pacific Theater. In 1951 he moved from Buchanan County, VA to Washington County, VA. Sam worked for the Raytheon Corporation for over 30 years and was a member of Pleasant View United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48 and the Patton-Crosswhite V.F.W. Post 6975 in Bristol. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Reece Van Dyke and Sarah Looney Van Dyke; wife, Faye Owens Van Dyke; brothers, Gallie, Perry, Johnny, Robert, Jake, and Bill Van Dyke; and sisters, Isa Runyon, Stella Whitt, Pearl Draper, Helen Ball, and June Lambert. He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends. Visitation with the family will be held 4-6 p.m. Sunday, June 30, 2019, in Pleasant View United Methodist Church. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Barbara Farmer and Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted during the service by Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48. A graveside committal service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military honors provided by Patton-Crosswhite V.F.W. Post 6975 and the Virginia National Guard. Honorary Pallbearers will be Guy Warner, Jack Booher, Lee Puckett, Chester Ostrowski, Jack Crawford, Ray Edwards, and Frank Stallard.
