Sarah Helen Painter Smythers, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2012. She was employed as a teacher with the Washington County School System for twenty years and Proffitt's Department Store for fourteen years. She was an avid reader who enjoyed sewing and traveling.
She was born to the late Edwin Douglas Painter and Sarah Leah Allison Painter in Pulaski County, VA. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Edwin A. Painter, Sr.
She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Warren Lewis Smythers; son, David Allison Smythers of Abingdon, VA; daughter, Janet Ann Smythers of Kingsport, TN; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Painter of AZ; two grandchildren, Jonathan Andrew Sheldon and Sarah Allison Sheldon; nephew, Edwin A. Painter, Jr.; niece, Ann Painter Savage; and special cousin, Jane McGlothlin of AZ.
A cryptside service will be held at the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 2012. Dr. Ralph Kidd will officiate. A reception will be held for family and friends at Farris Cremation and Funeral Center immediately following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Post Office Box 246, Abingdon, VA 24212.
