Sherman Epperson Woods

Abingdon, VA – Sherman Epperson “Jim” Woods, age 89 and of the Brumley Gap Community, passed on Friday, July 18, 2014, at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN. Jim was a U.S. Army Veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star during WWII. He was a member of Brumley Gap Methodist Church and loved to farm and fish. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, John Billings Woods and Roxie Woods; wife, Helen Marie “Cricket” Bennett Woods; step mother, Gladys Woods; brothers, Kenneth, Tom, and Samuel “Toehead” Woods; sister, Lillian Mitchell; and daughter-in-law, Julie Woods. Jim is survived by one son, Randy Woods of Bristol, VA; four daughters, Pauline (Benny) Nunley of Abingdon, VA, Dianna (Wayne) Pennington of Fairfax, VA, Donna Kay (Gary) Scott of Abingdon, VA, and Pam Smith and son-in-law Jim Smith of Durham, NC; brother, Robert Raymond Woods of Abingdon, VA; sisters, Jereleen Woods, Shirley Nidiffer, and Wilma Gobble, all of Bristol, VA; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 20, 2014, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Pastor Larry Linkous and Rev. Tony Nunley officiating. Interment will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery with Mike Wise, Bobby Alexander, Randy Parris, Phillip White, Lynn Ray Webb, Brad Webb, Clarence Gobble, and Steve Pickle serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Hayter, Paul Price, Bob Eades, Dr. James Gardner, Ruddy Duty, C.J. Smith, Jim Smith, Tim Cassidy, and Melvin Gobble. Military Rites will be conducted by Lebanon V.F.W. Post 9864. Visitation with the family will be held 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
