Shirley Eileen Snead

Shirley Eileen Snead, age 71, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, February 13, 2023, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born on October 26, 1951, in Saltville, VA, the older daughter of Earnest E. Snead and Lucille Montgomery Snead. She was predeceased by her father, mother and sister, Judy Vermillion. She is survived by special cousins, Mary Ann Gillespie of Bristol, TN, and Claudia Sikes of Highpoint, NC, as well as special friends, Susie McConnell, Mary Cumbo, Diane Jennings, and Alicia (Alice) Hodge. Shirley was a Christian and attended Greendale Chapel.

Shirley attended Washington County, VA schools and earned collegiate degrees from Radford University. In 1972, Shirley was chosen as an inaugural scholar for the inauguration of Radford’s President, Dr. Donald Dedman. In 1973, she graduated with honors, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Accounting. She was member of Phi Kappa Phi. Upon graduation in 1973, she was hired as a teacher in Washington County, VA. During her 39 years of teaching, she taught students from Holston, John Battle and Patrick Henry schools. In 1978, she received her Master of Science degree in Secondary Education and Mathematics. She served as mathematics adjunct instructor of Virginia Highlands Community College for 20 years. Shirley taught many students and was very proud of their accomplishments. She was a coach for the academic SWAC teams for Holston High School for over 30 years. She was a member of the Washington County Education Association.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (Alpha Zeta Chapter), and had recently served as recording secretary. At the time of her death she was treasurer of the Washington County Retired Teachers Association.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. The funeral will be at 6:00 pm on Thursday, February 16, 2023, with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. The burial will be private.
