Sophia Griffith Smith, 84, passed away on Thursday, February 24, 2011.
Born to the late Frank W. Griffith and Tilda Kinder Griffith in Kentucky, and moving to Abingdon over 45 years ago, she was the widow of Stuart H. Smith. Sophia was a longtime member of the Church of Christ in Abingdon and had retired as an operating room nurse.
She is survived by a son, William H. Smith of Glade Spring, VA; two daughters, Brenda Stein of Abingdon, VA and Gwen Overbay of Cornelius, NC; one brother, Leo Griffith of Louisville, KY; three sisters, Ruby Fletcher of Johnson City, TN, Beatrice Keene of Mouthcard, KY, and Shelby Compton of Grundy, VA; along with five grandchildren, Leah, Michelle, Travis, Jessica, and Brett; and three great-grandchildren, Bryce, Gannon, and Darrion.
A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. at Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210 with Bill Haywood, Minister, officiating. A procession to Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon, VA will follow the chapel service for burial.
The family will receive friends at the Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA 24210 on Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 5:00 to 7:00pm.
