Abingdon

Stuart Junior Thomas, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, in Abingdon, Virginia, at the age of 79. Born on May 25, 1945, in Washington County, Virginia, to the late Joe Jessie Thomas and Ellen Rosie Thomas. Stuart spent most of his life dedicated to farming, a career that he approached with the same kindness and welcoming spirit that permeated all aspects of his life.

Stuart was known for his unwavering warmth and ability to make others feel at ease, a trait that endeared him to many. He cherished the time spent with his family, embracing every opportunity to connect with them through shared hobbies and interests. His love for the outdoors was evident in his enjoyment of hunting, fishing, and trapping. He particularly relished car rides into the mountains with his wife, Shelia, where they would create lasting memories together. Many afternoons were spent hunting for ginseng with his grandchildren and nephews, moments that showcased not only his passion for nature but also his dedication to family. Stuart was a member of Gospel Tabernacle in Abingdon, VA. Stuart loved talking about God to everyone he met. He enjoyed sitting at Walmart just to talk to a stranger about God.

In addition to his parents, Stuart was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Kenneth Hockett and seven siblings.

Stuart's family was undoubtedly his proudest accomplishment, and he took immense joy in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Shelia Thomas, as well as his daughters, Peggy Parker and husband Chad, and Hope Hockett. His legacy continues through his grandchildren,  Adam Byington and wife Julia, Amber Cook and husband Joe, and Kenny Hockett and great-grandchildren Abbigail Byington, Wyatt Cook, Waverly Cook and a new great-grandbaby due in August. He is also survived by his special nephew, Jody Thomas, along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
