Vince Monroe Calvert, Jr., 80, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2022, at Bristol Regional Hospital. He was a longtime resident of the Abingdon area and was the owner of Calvert’s Custom Closets.
His involvement with Pleasant View United Methodist Church touched the lives of many locally and abroad. He was instrumental in forming the Helping Hands mission project at the church. During tornado of 2010, he assisted in the rebuilding and renovation of homes decimated by the storm. He also helped with cleanup of the downed trees and debris left in the aftermath.
Vince participated in the New Hope Outreach ministry, delivering meals to the sick and shut ins on Saturday mornings. He made many friends and was able to minister to them as well. And, over the years, Vince served on many mission teams that served the communities of Johns Island, SC and Honduras.
Vince was very involved in the Highlands Emmaus community. He served on several teams and served as the Lay Director of a Men’s Walk to Emmaus. He also sponsored several people as Pilgrims on the Walks.
He and his late wife Lorna taught Sunday School and lead fellowship meetings at church. His and Lorna’s specialty was sausage balls.
Vince was predeceased by his wife Lorna, parents Vince Monroe and Retha Widener Calvert.
He is survived by sons Vince D. Calvert and wife Elizabeth and Patrick Calvert and wife Heidi, stepchildren John Wesley Cox and wife Holli and Cindy Hollingsworth and husband John, grandchildren Jessica and Matthew Calvert, step grandchildren Wes Cox (Madison), Jacob Cox and Sarah Grace Hollingsworth, brothers Billy and Danny Calvert, sisters Imogene Law, Geraldine Welch, Karen Calvert and Helen Lilly.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 1, 2022, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Dale Gilbert and Rev. Barbara Farmer officiating. The family will greet friends after the service.
