Virginia Smith Evans

Our Mother, Virginia Evans, age 99, passed away peacefully at home in Abingdon, VA. She was born on July 23, 1924, in New Jersey to Eugene Jefferson Smith and Olive Woodhouse Smith. 

She is preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Marian Backus, and Eugenia Shanklin. Virginia was married on January 22, 1949, to Dennis C. Evans, who has also preceded her in death.

She is survived by three children, Janet L. McGraw and husband Dean of Abingdon, VA, Dennis C. Evans, Jr. and wife Donna of Virginia Beach, VA, and Stuart R. Evans and wife Dawn of Woodridge, VA: seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Virginia enjoyed playing Bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs in Abingdon. She loved to read and traveled the world in her books. She was a frequent visitor of the Washington County Library. She was a joy to all who met her and will be missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of life service on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. in the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon with Pastor Kevin Campbell presiding. A visitation with the family will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. A reception will follow the service in the church Fellowship Hall.
