Virginia Jones Porterfield

Virginia "Ginger" Jones Porterfield, of Raleigh, NC died peacefully on February 14, 2014 at the age of 102. She was born in Louisa County, VA on December 30, 1911 to the late Alonzo Lewis and Virginia Graves Jones.
Ginger attended West Hampton College in Richmond, VA and graduated from Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA in 1934. She taught home economics and raised two daughters while living in VA and Pelham, NY. After retiring with her husband to Tampa, FL and Bermuda Run, NC she came to Springmoor Retirement Community in Raleigh, NC in 1992 and was a charter member of Grace Community Church.
Among her hobbies were sewing, weaving, and golf. She was known for her many beautiful creations from her loom. Ginger played golf into her 90's and had her only hole in one at the age of 96. She was an active member of the Alzheimer's Support Groups in NC since 1977 when her husband was diagnosed with the disease, and while at Springmoor, she was a comfort to many who had a loved one with Alzheimer's.
Mrs. Porterfield is predeceased by her husband, Bill, and her daughter, Betty Mahoney. She is survived by her daughter, Becky Crenshaw and husband Les of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Laura McGovern and husband Terry of Wrentham, MA and Brian Crenshaw and wife Lindsey of Wake Forest, NC; great grandchildren, Cameron and Anna McGovern of Wrentham, MA. She was loved by many other family members and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery in Glade Spring, VA with the Reverend Susanne Martin officiating. Brian Crenshaw, Les Crenshaw, John Jones, Wendy Jones, Cameron McGovern, Terry McGovern, and Sonny Porterfield will serve as pallbearers.
The family would like to thank all the Staff at Springmoor for their loving care of our beloved "Ginger", "Mom" and "Nana" for more than 20 years. We are forever grateful.
