Virginia Leidig Sutherland, age 93, of Abingdon, Va. and formerly of St. Paul, Va., passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2016, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born on July 7, 1922, in Waverly, Tenn. to the late Rev. Daniel Gsell Leidig, Sr. and Arta Evans Leidig. Though she was a graduate of Emory and Henry College, Virginia considered herself a country girl, but to anyone blessed to have known her knew she was anything but simple. She will be remembered for her stories, her laugh, and her kindness to all. She was a gardener, cook, seamstress, and a storyteller. She was a sister, wife, mother, a grandmother to two, as well as, a great grandmother to three, but a Mimi to many. She was loved by all. Virginia was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, Virginia was also preceded in death by three brothers, Rev. Samuel Leidig, Rev. Milton Leidig, and Dr. Daniel Gsell Leidig, Jr.
She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, William L. Sutherland; two daughters, Jane Sutherland Chinault of Lexington, S.C. and Mary Sutherland and husband Eric Estes of Mineral, Va.; two grandchildren, Jennifer Whitley and husband Kris and Jonathan Chinault and wife Michelle all of Lexington, S.C.; three great grandchildren, Aidan Chinault, Bryson Whitley, and Collins Whitley; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and grand nieces and nephews.
Visitation will from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at the Abingdon United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Countiss officiating. A private committal service will be held following the memorial service at Holston Conference Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Daniel G. Leidig Lectureship Endowed Fund, c/o Emory and Henry College, P.O. Box 947, Emory, Va. 24327.
