Warren “Lewis” Smythers, age 93, formerly of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Elmcroft of Kingsport, Tenn. He was born May 29, 1924, to the late Walter Painter Smythers and Cora Augusta Jones Smythers in Carroll County, Va. Lewis was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He retired from Appalachian Power Company after 40 plus years of service and was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, Lewis was also preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Sarah “Helen” Painter Smythers; his twin sister, Emma Louise Smythers; and two additional sisters, Mrs. Marvin Alford and Mrs. Clarence Rosenbaum.
He is survived by his son, David Smythers of Lebanon, Va.; daughter, Janet Smythers of Kingsport, Tenn.; sister, Ruth Sexton Smythers of Galax, Va.; two grandchildren, Sarah Allison Howerton and Jonathan Andrew Sheldon; and several nieces and nephews.
A cryptside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018, in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum of Forest Hills Memory Gardens where military honors will be provided by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the United States Navy.
