Warren William McCray, a beloved member of the Abingdon community, passed away on August 28, 2023. He was a respected businessman, contractor and developer who owned and operated Abingdon Tile and Carpet company for many years. Warren worked at Sperry/Raytheon for 12 years. He owned and operated McCray construction for over 50 years. Warren's dedication to his craft and commitment to his customers made him a well-known figure in the industry.
Born on November 14, 1928, to the late Harrison McCray and Naomi Crusenberry McCray, Warren was raised with strong values and a sense of responsibility. His love for his country led him to serve in the United States Army and was a World War II veteran, where he demonstrated courage and selflessness.
Throughout his life, Warren accomplished numerous achievements that highlighted his deep involvement in community service. He served on various boards and committees, including the Washington County Board of Supervisors, Washington County Planning Commission, Washington County Board of Zoning Appeals, Park Authority, Washington County Public Library Board, Abingdon Reaction, Service Authority, VA National and Highlands Union Bank Boards. Warren's dedication to public service was admirable as he worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for those around him.
Warren McCray was not only committed to his professional career but also dedicated himself to making a positive impact on the lives of others. He took on important roles within the Boy Scouts organization. Warren was a member of Greendale Chapel Church. Additionally, Warren was a member of American Legion, Free Mason, a Shriner and member of VFW.
Outside of his illustrious career and community involvement, Warren cherished time spent with his family. He will forever be remembered by his adoring wife Imogene Anderson McCray, their daughter Amelia Sue McCray, and daughter-in-law Carol Keesee McCray. Warren's grandchildren were a great source of pride and joy to him: Jessica Buchanan and her husband Eric Buchanan, Jennifer Puckett and her husband Andy Puckett, and Molly Jean McCray, great grandchildren Whitten Puckett, Camden Puckett, Tanner Buchanan, and two brothers Paul McCray, and Donald McCray and sister-in-law Carol. Warren also leaves behind his sister Dana Duncan-Moore and husband Gerald, sister Dot Long, brother-in-law W.V. Anderson and wife Betty, sister-in-law Katherine Godsey and husband Jimmy and sister-in-law Cindy McCray, as well as several nieces and nephews whom he cherished.
Warren McCray's passing has left an immense void in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, his selflessness in serving others, and his relentless pursuit of excellence.
In addition to his parents, Warren is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Warren McCray, brothers Harry McCray and his wife June, Bobby McCray, brothers-in-law R.D. Anderson and his wife Faye, Norris Anderson and his wife Judy, Ray Duncan and sisters-in-law Mildred Anderson Lee and Zella McCray.
A visitation for friends and family will be held at Greendale Chapel on Sunday, September 3, 2023, from 1:30 PM to 2:45 PM. The funeral service will follow at Greendale Chapel at 3:00 PM with Rev. Jerry Eggers and Minister Bill Haywood officiating . Burial will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Military rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and Virginia Army National Guard. Pallbearers will be Eric Buchanan, Andy Puckett, Rick Blevins, L.J. Doss, Bill Kittrell, Mark Barrett, Whitten Puckett, Camden Puckett and Tanner Buchanan. Honorary pallbearers will be Charlie Henderson, Jimmy Godsey, David Duncan, Sage Johnson, Bernard Neese, Men of Greendale Chapel, his special friends, Dayton Harris and Allen Stanley.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Caris Healthcare, Connie Daggs, Stephanie Caudill and the Veterans Administration for the care they provided Warren.
